Blitz Season Is Here: How to Prepare Your Fleet for Operation Safe Driver Week & Brake Safety Week

For fleet owners and commercial drivers, summer doesn't just bring warmer temperatures, it also marks the start of CVSA inspection and enforcement season, commonly referred to as "Blitz Season." Two of the industry's most important safety initiatives, Operation Safe Driver Week and Brake Safety Week, put commercial vehicles and drivers under increased scrutiny throughout North America.

The good news? With the right preventive maintenance and preparation, your fleet can confidently navigate these inspections while minimizing downtime and avoiding costly violations.

What Is Operation Safe Driver Week?

Operation Safe Driver Week, organized annually by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), is scheduled for July 12–18, 2026. During this week, law enforcement officers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico focus on unsafe driving behaviors by both commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers.

This year's enforcement campaign places special emphasis on reckless, careless, and dangerous driving. Officers will be watching for behaviors such as:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Following too closely
  • Improper lane changes
  • Failure to wear a seat belt
  • Impaired driving
  • Ignoring traffic signals
  • Fatigued or drowsy driving

Drivers found violating traffic laws may receive warnings or citations, making it an excellent time for fleets to review safe driving practices with their teams.

Brake Safety Week Is Right Around the Corner

Following Operation Safe Driver Week, fleets should begin preparing for Brake Safety Week, scheduled for August 23–29, 2026. During this initiative, certified inspectors conduct roadside inspections with a primary focus on commercial vehicle braking systems. This year's emphasis is on brake drums and rotors, as defects in these components can significantly reduce braking performance and increase crash risk.

Inspectors will evaluate items such as:

  • Brake linings and pads
  • Drums and rotors
  • Air brake systems
  • Brake hoses
  • Slack adjusters
  • Air leaks
  • Overall brake operation

Vehicles with brake-related out-of-service violations may be removed from service until repairs are completed. Brake-related defects continue to be one of the leading reasons commercial vehicles are placed out of service during roadside inspections.

Preventive Maintenance Is Your Best Defense

Blitz season shouldn't create stress for fleets that prioritize preventive maintenance. Routine inspections throughout the year dramatically reduce the likelihood of unexpected violations.

Before these enforcement campaigns begin, fleet managers should schedule inspections that include:

  • Complete brake system inspections
  • Tire condition and air pressure checks
  • Steering and suspension inspections
  • Lighting and electrical system checks
  • Windshield wipers and mirrors
  • Fluid level inspections
  • Air system leak testing
  • Review of warning lights and diagnostic fault codes

Drivers should also perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections every day and immediately report any defects before operating their vehicles.

Driver Preparation Matters Too

Vehicle condition is only one part of a successful inspection. Drivers should ensure they have:

  • A valid CDL
  • Current medical certification
  • Accurate hours-of-service records
  • Proper vehicle registration and insurance
  • A thorough understanding of daily inspection procedures

Reviewing safe driving habits before Operation Safe Driver Week can also help reduce citations and reinforce your company's commitment to safety.
